Civil Rights Journey to the South
with SAJ, Grace Church and West End Synagogue
Sunday, January 26 - Tuesday, January 28, 2020
Join us on a once-in-a-lifetime Civil Rights Journey to Atlanta, Montgomery, and Birmingham. During these three days, we will meet with ministers who worked with Dr. King and experience church services in the famed Ebenezer Baptist Church. Among the many sites, we will visit the Rosa Parks Museum, the National Human & Civil Rights Museum, and the new Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum & Lynching Memorial. We will speak with those who marched from Selma to Montgomery and walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge*.
Alongside these and other incredible first-hand experiences, we will engage with the contemporary realities of race and racism, the legacy of civil rights, and consider how each of us can make an impact. We will also enjoy building our own community as we travel, eat, and reflect together.
This program is run through Etgar 36, a pluralistic, nonpartisan and nonprofit Jewish educational venture that leads (primarily) Jewish groups to the South to better understand the history of the civil rights movement, the connection between Jews and African-Americans during that time, and to consider issues in the present moment connected with civil rights. During the trip, we will also reflect on Jewish-African-American relations then and now.
In order to run the trip, we need 20 or more people, so early registration is vital. In addition, we welcome SAJ members, Grace members, West End members, as well as friends and family of our community members.
The fee includes all hotel, ground transportation, admissions, and all but one meal. The trip begins in Atlanta, GA on Sunday, morning, January 26 and ends in Birmingham, AL on Tuesday afternoon, January 28. Transportation will be available back to Birmingham Airport and Atlanta Airport. Modest scholarships available. Contact Rabbi Lauren.
*Please note this trip can accommodate those with more limited mobility. Let Rabbi Lauren know if you have questions.
