Tour of the African Burial Ground National Monument

Wednesday, September 4, 2019 4 Elul 5779

11:30 AM - 1:30 PMAFBG Visitors Center, 290 Broadway

As part of our continuing Sacred Conversations with Grace Congregational Church, members of both congregations will tour the African Burial Ground National Monument in Lower Manhattan.

While excavating for a new Federal office building in Manhattan buried remains of enslaved people were uncovered. The Federal government, after an intense fight, agreed to allocate space and resources for a museum/visitor center and outdoor memorial. The 90-minute tour will be led by a National Park Ranger who will take us through the museum and then through the memorial. After the tour we will have the opportunity to talk about the visit. Some will remember the fight to establish the facility and the elaborate reburial ceremonies.

We will meet inside the visitors center, 290 Broadway near the corner of Duane St. We will go through TSA-like security when we arrive and later when we reenter for discussion.

There are no bathrooms at the memorial. The visitor center has bathrooms, water fountains, exhibits, a 20-minute park movie and a bookstore/gift shop.

Sorry, Registration has ended.
