Upcoming Program Highlights
APRIL 12: Social Justice
Our April Synaplex will feature a talk with James Wolfensohn, former leader of the World Bank, and discussions with young social activists.
What is Synaplex?
It’s a major new program for Shabbat at The Society for the Advancement of Judaism. It’s a 21st century expression of The SAJ’s historic mission: to keep Judaism relevant in a rapidly changing world.
Synaplex is based on the idea that there are many authentic ways to celebrate Shabbat—Jewish arts and culture, nature, physical activity, meditative practice, helping others—in addition to traditional activities like prayer, study, and gathering.
Therefore, Synaplex combines the traditional functions of the synagogue with a diverse program of activities. Synaplex brings these together, on one special day, Shabbat (Jewish “prime time”), in one place, the synagogue, with one important group of people: your own Jewish community.
At the SAJ, an innovative synagogue affiliated with both the Reconstructionist and Conservative movements, we have always believed there are many ways to celebrate Shabbat, and we proud to offer this unique program that dramatically expands that vision.
What should I expect?
On a Synaplex Shabbat you will find The SAJ’s longstanding Shabbat traditions of learning (the “tish”), egalitarian morning services, meditation, and Kiddush/lunch, with many additional activities for adults and children, starting early in the morning, and continuing into the mid afternoon.
Stay for whatever parts of the day you wish, and take the opportunity to try something new!
We hope you find your Synaplex Shabbat experiences rewarding, interesting, and enjoyable!
Who’s invited?
All Synaplex programs, activities, meals, and of course services are free and open to the community, so we welcome everyone!
Members: don’t forget to bring your friends and neighbors.
How can I help?
Come and participate in all the activities you wish. Give us your feedback. Volunteer to assist at future events. Submit program ideas, or even better, talk to us about one you can DO!
The SAJ is proud to be part of the Synaplex Initiative of STAR (Synagogues: Transformation and Renewal). STAR is a philanthropic partnership of the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Foundation, Jewish Life Network/Steinhardt Foundation, and The Samuel Bronfman Foundation.
