Annual Scholar-in-Residence Program

A series of three sessions beginning Friday evening and continuing on Saturday, taught by our scholar-in-residence, Dr. Moshe Halbertal. Full details below!

 

Dr. Halbertal is a professor of Jewish Thought and Philosophy at Hebrew University and a fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute. The author of numerous books, Dr. Halbertal is the recipient of the Bruno Award of the Rothschild Foundation and the Goren Goldstein Award for the best book in Jewish thought in the years 1997-2000.

Scholar-in-Residence teaching—“Violence and the Sacred: Power and the Mechanism of Violence” with Dr. Moshe Halbertal

What sources within religion bring about the confluence of the sacred and the violent? How can we find another way of looking at this juxtaposition? What would such a process entail for our civilization? What inner religious language can we use to overcome such tendencies?

Join us as one of the best teachers and leading scholars of our time discusses these issues, focusing in this first session on a reading of the Book of Samuel, especially the story of Amnon and Tamar.

Doesn’t the idea that there is only one God and all other gods are false encourage war on behalf of the Truth? Dr. Halbertal will examine the monotheistic war against idolatry and its complex relations to violence.

Dr. Halbertal will lead us in taking a look at stories from the Talmud about scholars and violence.

 

Description of Activities

Before Services

Breakfast. For everyone! A great start to your day, whether for prayer, learning, or moving your body.

The Meditation in the Sanctuary prior to services will incorporate silence, some singing, and a teaching or kavanah (intention).  Whether you are experienced at meditating or you’re a beginner, please join us.

The Tish is a discussion over coffee and biscotti, led by a community member or guest on a different theme each week.

Morning Programs

Sanctuary Service at The SAJ is egalitarian and blends joyous singing and prayer to create a time for reflection and connection.

Rabbi Michael Strassfeld and Cantor Elizabeth Stevens

The Learner's Minyan provides a comfortable environment in which to learn the ins and outs of the Shabbat morning service. The Learner's Minyan joins with the regular sanctuary service for the Torah discussion. Please bring your questions.

Rabbi Joy Levitt is Associate Executive Director of Programming at the JCC in Manhattan.

Torah discussion in Sanctuary. The d’var Torah commentary within the sanctuary service is followed by open discussion of religious and textual issues among congregants and guests.

Family Service. For children ages 6 and up and their parents. Join us for an interactive service specifically designed for families, with lots of singing, explanations, and stories.

Rabbi Joy Levitt is Associate Executive Director of Programming at the JCC in Manhattan.

Tot Shabbat. For ages 3–6; under 3 with a parent. Children are introduced to the richness of Shabbat through songs, stories, prayers, and projects.

Debra Frankel is the Associate Director at the JCC Nursery School.  She has her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood/Elementary Education and has been working in the field for the past 15 years with children from 2 through 13 years of age. Debra also plays the guitar and is looking forward to bringing her music to Tot Shabbat as well. It is with great enthusiasm that she joins the program, and she looks forward to getting to know and working with the families and children at The SAJ.

Kiddush / Lunch. Refill yourself for the afternoon in our wonderful, new social hall. Get to know fellow members and visitors.

“Judaism and the Afterlife”

How has Judaism traditionally understood the notion of life after death? Join us as we look at texts from different eras and explore the ways in which Judaism has imagined the afterlife.

Joshua Boettiger is a rabbinic student at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. He was an intern at The SAJ last year.

Modern Hebrew through Songs

Have fun learning Hebrew vocabulary through Israeli song lyrics, just as Naomi learned English as a student in Israel. We will learn the context and lyrics, and listen to recordings.

This class continues on Thursdays at 7 pm on the following dates: November 10, 17; December 1, 8, 15, 22; January 5,12, 19.

Naomi Schwarzbaum was born in Israel and is an SAJ member.

Tai Chi as a Spiritual Practice with Rabbi Andrew Hahn

For adults and older children.

Rabbi Andrew Hahn has been teaching martial arts for more than 25 years in his Tai Chi Prayer ™ classes.

“Organizing Your Kids”

Learn strategies for instilling organizational skills that help kids to juggle extracurricular activities with their academics in the short term, as well as to develop good habits that last a lifetime.

Julie Isaacs, a former English teacher, runs her own organizing business and has held organizational seminars for school districts.

Capoeira for Kids

For ages 6-12. Instructors from Afro Brazilian Arts teach this dynamic fusion of Brazilian dance and martial arts accompanied by lively percussion. The session also features a performance by the instructors.

Afro Brazilian Arts is a non-profit youth development organization teaching capoeira in the U.S. and Brazil since 1991.
