97 Orchard Street

SAJ welcomes author and culinary expert Jane Ziegelman, to discuss her latest book, 97 Orchard Street, An Edible History of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenement
Friday, June 4: 6:15 pm – Wine and Cheese, Author Talk and Book Signing, 7:30 pm – Kabbalat Shabbat Service (followed by potluck dinner)

97 Orchard Street is a great New York immigrant story about five families – Irish, Italian, Eastern European Jewish and German -- who lived in this tenement during the period 1863-1935. The families are interestingly and colorfully drawn with descriptions of their immigrant experience, their history, their customs and foods – even some of their recipes. The five families portrayed sought assimilation but still hung on fiercely to their recipes from “the old country.” Jane Ziegelman is the director of the Tenement Museum’s forthcoming culinary center, the founder of Kids Cook, a multiethnic cooking program for children, and is a prolific food writer. Books will be available for purcahse.
